With just a bit more than 4,000 residents, Burgaw is one of the quintessential small towns to be found throughout the Carolinas. White frame houses and the court house square are set amid ancient oaks. Park benches invite you to sit for a spell and enjoy the slower pace of Burgaw. When you're ready to move on, visit Dees Drug Store for an old-fashioned lemonade or stop by Harrell's Department Store, which has been in business more than 100 years.

Perhaps the most famous spot is the Historical Train Depot, which memorializes the town's stop on the early Wilmington to Weldon line. The depot dates back to 1850 but the town of Burgaw was not incorporated until 1879.

Wine enthusiasts will want to plan a stop at Bannerman Vineyard, Pender County's only winery. The family-owned business has been growing muscadine grapes since 1973 producing several varieties of red, white and blush wines. In the spring, a blueberry wine will help celebrate the season.

The town was named for its earliest residents were the Burgaw Indians and is today the Pender County seat. It is convenient to local beaches which draw large crowds during the summer months. And while there are many businesses in town to serve the needs of residents, it's nice to know that Wilmington is just 25 miles to the south with its many dining and shopping experiences.

Burgaw prides itself on its Southern charm and hospitality and invites you to experience it for yourself. Whether you plan a visit to Burgaw and Pender County or have just a few minutes to take a break from I-40, you'll be welcomed with open arms.
